The springs do most of the work in a trampoline. They store the energy of each jump and give it back, and they do it outdoors, in all weather, for years. This case study covers a project by our R&D team to improve the performance of trampoline springs through better design and materials.
Background
Traditional trampolines use basic springs, and these often give a poor bounce and do not last. We set out to improve trampoline performance by redesigning the spring itself.
Objectives
- Bounce quality: a better, more consistent bounce and rebound for the user.
- Durability: a longer life in different outdoor conditions.
- Safety: a lower risk of spring failure.
Our Approach
Material
We chose AISI 316 stainless steel for its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Rust is the usual end of a trampoline spring that lives outdoors, and this grade gives a longer life in that environment, including in humid and coastal areas.
Design
- Consistent tension: a trampoline uses many springs around its frame, and the bounce is only even if they all pull alike. The springs were made to a tight load tolerance for that reason.
- Hook ends: the ends were formed for secure attachment to the frame and the mat, with the tension spread evenly.
- Stretch: the springs can extend by up to 50% of their free length without permanent deformation, which protects both safety and performance.
Surface Treatment
The springs were electropolished and then passivated. The two processes together improve corrosion resistance and leave a smoother surface.
Environmental Testing
The springs were tested in different climates, from humid coastal regions to dry inland areas, to confirm reliable performance in each.
Results
- Users reported a clearly better bounce.
- Spring life was extended by 30%, with less maintenance needed.
- The incidence of spring failure fell by 40%.
What This Project Shows
A trampoline spring is a simple part, but it decides how the product feels and how long it lasts. Consistent tension from spring to spring gives the even bounce, and corrosion resistance gives the long life outdoors.
